I’m embarrassed to use Care For Moms – shouldn’t I be able to manage by myself?
The American postpartum culture that exists today can be very rough on new parents. In fact, just about 100 years ago postpartum women were encouraged to stay in bed for up to four or more weeks for what was known as the “lying-in period”. During this time, the new mother would rest, regain her physical strength and bond with her new baby while female attendants (sometimes relatives, sometimes not) would take care of her household. This practice of lying in and the social support network that supported it later disappeared during the 19th century and sadly was never replaced with a new custom or practice. Today American women are expected to return to their household duties and/or work shortly after having given birth. This practice is not only unnatural but can also be exhausting for new parents who need to reserve their energy to adapt to the rhythms of a new baby. American postpartum practices are utterly lacking in caring for new moms, yet the rest of the world including Asia, Africa, the Middle East and parts of Europe all have some version of a lying in period that encourage healing, rest and protect this precious bonding period.
Care For Moms is bringing back the lying in period for new moms and for those who neglected this special time, we’re here to give you a rest – because you could probably use it!
