Yesterday, on Labor Day my family and I had the pleasure of attending the Midwives of New Jersey Improving Birth Rally in Madison, New Jersey. As we were getting ready to leave in the morning, my oldest daughter asked me what the Rally would be like and why we were going. I spoke to her about how fortunate I was to have such beautiful births, attended and supported by a group of women who respected, encouraged and supported me throughout both of my pregnancies and births. I talked about how she and her sister were born at home in a peaceful tub of water, welcomed into the world by my husband and I and our midwives. Their birth days were truly the best days of my life!
The reason it is ever so important that my two young daughters see and hear about the importance of birth and women having the right to choose, is that it is my hope that they too will be respected and cared for during this most precious time in their lives – and that if they aren’t they will know how to fight for it. We women who have been so fortunate to have been respected and cared for during pregnancy and birth – we need to stand up, we need to tell our daughters, our nieces, our girlfriends that they have options, that they can speak up. Improving Birth. It matters so much.
