Having a baby is filled with sweet smelling baby clothes and baby breath and tiny finger and toes…BUT it is also filled with a great deal of diaper duty! If you would like to save some money, avoid harsh chemicals and have a few minutes of extra time you can easily make your own homemade scent-free baby wipes, perfect for that sensitive baby bottom.
Homemade Scent-Free Baby Wipes Recipe
What you will need:
1 roll of quality, thick paper towels (Viva or Bounty work well)
3.5 cups of distilled water (you can boil and let cool if you don’t have distilled on hand)
2 Tablespoon of Witch Hazel
1 1/2 Tablespoon pure Aloe Vera Gel
1 1/2 Tablespoon unscented Castille Soap
1/4 teaspoon Vitamin E oil (acts as a natural preservative)
Container to mix ingredients together in
2 old wipes containers or a large rubbermaid container with lid for storing wipes
Directions
1. Combine all ingredients, adding the water first to avoid creating lots of bubbles.
2. Next, cut your paper towel roll in half with a sharp kitchen knife. Remove the cardboard tube from the center of each half and fold, accordion style, into your containers of choice.
3. Pour half of the mixture of water, witch hazel, aloe and castille soap over one half and the other over the other half and let it absorb thoroughly. If using an old wipe container, you can pull the top towel through and you should be able to easily pull them through as you would regular baby wipes.
A Few Notes:
If you do not wish to use paper towels, you can use cloth wipes instead and add the wipe solution using the same recipe above in a spray bottle. Simply spray solution onto your cloth wipe before each use or you can spray it directly onto the baby’s bottom and then wipe with a dry cloth.
These homemade baby wipes are scent-free but you can also add several drops of an essential oil if you wish. There is some debate as to if essential oils are safe for baby’s skin, but two that have been deemed the safest are chamomile and lavender.
Homemade baby wipes are also great for travel, just grab from the bottom of the stack and put them in a travel baby wipe case. You will find that you use less wipes, they clean better and leave your baby’s bottom much softer and you should see less rashes as well.
